Or someone who couldn&#8217;t care less as long as your copy sells?<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, one thing&#8217;s for sure:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"reduced-width-fifty\" style=\"display: table;\"><p>\nThe last thing you want as a copywriter is to look an idiot.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because when you look an idiot then so do your clients. And that&#8217;s bad for business.<\/p>\n<p>Now this isn&#8217;t some kind of spelling or grammar lecture.<\/p>\n<p>Far from it.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>High-quality content is so much more than simply following <a href=\"\/\/writeonline.io\/blog\/common-sense-editing-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">standard writing principles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, English is a living language that&#8217;s continually evolving, where new words and phrases are entering our vocabulary all the time.<\/p>\n<p>And so the notion that many of our new words and phrases are somehow bad English is, to me, utterly ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, there comes a point where every writer and editor has to draw the line.<\/p>\n<p>These are the words and phrases that:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"reduced-width-sixty\">\n<ul class=\"block-quote\" style=\"padding-top: 0.6em; padding-bottom: 0em;\">\n<li>Really do NOT exist<\/li>\n<li>Will NEVER exist (by virtue of their stupidity)<\/li>\n<li>Are blatant incorrect use of English<\/li>\n<li>Will make any copywriter who uses them look like a clown<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a selection of just five of the very worst offenders, although it has to be said there are many more:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Fine Toothcomb<\/h2>\n<p>As it happens, there is such a thing as a <em>toothcomb<\/em> and it refers to a comb-like dental arrangement found in certain animals. But one thing it definitely isn\u2019t and that&#8217;s something for combing teeth.<\/p>\n<p>What, of course, the writer actually means is a <em>fine-toothed comb<\/em>, namely something that conveys the idea of going through things in fine detail.<\/p>\n<h2>2. On Tenderhooks<\/h2>\n<p>In times gone by, new cloth was hung out and stretched, or suspended, on a frame in order to prevent it from shrinking. This was known as <em>tenting<\/em>, because of the similarities to a tent. And the hooks used were known as <em>tenterhooks<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So now you know the background to the phrase, there&#8217;s no excuse for incorrectly writing <em>on tenderhooks<\/em> ever again.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Sort-After<\/h2>\n<p>You often see the phrase <em>a much sort-after location<\/em> in property sales literature. But when you go in quest of something, you <em>seek after<\/em> it not <em>sort after<\/em> it.<\/p>\n<p>So quite clearly the correct term to refer to something in demand is <em>sought-after<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>4. In the Throws Of<\/h2>\n<p>The correct form is <em>in the throes<\/em> of and it comes from the rather archaic word <em>throe<\/em>, which means a violent pain or struggle.<\/p>\n<p>So when you&#8217;re <em>in the throes of<\/em> something, you&#8217;re going to considerable pain or effort to get through it.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Irregardless<\/h2>\n<p>You can say either <em>regardless<\/em> or <em>irrespective<\/em>. But one thing you cannot say is <em>irregardless<\/em>. If you do, you just end up looking stupid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 1.2em;\">Now the most basic task of any copywriter is to clearly explain what&#8217;s on offer and why the target reader would want it. But all this is pointless if you undermine your trust and credibility with non-existent halfwit words and phrases.<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the added bonus:<\/p>\n<p>By avoiding these mistakes, not only will your writing sell more \u2013 but you&#8217;ll also keep the annoying grammar police off your back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"display-profile-header\" style=\"font-size: 155%;\">Have your say<\/p>\n<p class=\"calltoaction\"><strong>What do you think?<\/strong> Tell us in the comment section below.
